Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on the 24th day of August 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt showed it to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as an instrument for social activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially aware and taught her to make use of the arts as a means to express herself. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. While she was still in school, DuVernay was interested in creating for broadcast journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the home and looking through the waste belonging to one of the jury. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right after she graduated from school. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Additionally, she started a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
